Heating – so important when you need it

Heating – so important when you need it

Heating, cooling and ventilation form the most important utility services used in most homes. Existing heating systems may or may not provide adequate heating during cold winter months and it is advisable to change to a more cost saving and energy efficient system at home. Homeowners are constantly trying to find new ways of heating homes in a manner that will most suit their heating requirements and at the same time do not end up increasing the money spent on utility bills, especially during the winter months.

Heat systems
Different types of heat systems are used in homes. These include central heat, radiant heat and various types of heatsuch as electric heat, tank-less water heat, strip heaters and oil heaters among others. The selection of the heaters must be based on factors such as size of the house, the rooms that require heating, the age and lifestyle of the people in the house and above all, the amount of money being spent on the installation and maintenance of the heating system at home.

Improving heating efficiency
Heating efficiency can be improved with little effort and time. The heating systems should be serviced regularly and the filters of the heating unit changed at regular intervals or as and when necessary. The duct system that is connected to the furnace should also be sealed as leaks may circulate unheated air in the rooms. Windows must be utilized to their optimum by positioning them so as to let the sun in and must be tightly sealed in winters to keep the warm air in.

Reducing heating bills
All rooms in the house may not require the same amount of heat. If certain rooms are not used as living spaces, the heat supplied to these rooms can be reduced or controlled using a thermostat. In case no one is at home at night or on a holiday, it is advisable to turn down the heat. This will help save money on heating bills. Referring to ideas from utility companies on cost saving methods will also help in reducing money spent on heating bills.
