Security...Check those door locks
Your
doors may be a weak spot in your home security perimeter. And
you dont even know it.
Something
that was brought to my attention, about my door locks that I never
thought about. We have some french doors that we love, and have
no plans to get rid of. French doors are the exit doors, usually
going on the back of a house. The entire door is made up of small
window panes. Very beautiful, and really let the glorious outdoors
eek into your living space. We have dead bolts with the turn handle
to deactivate the dead bolt on both of our French doors. I thought
that these were sufficient. The point was brought up that a possible
intruder can easily break one of the panes next to the lock reach
in and unlock the door to enter. This can be done very easily
without much effort. I know it scared me too.
Some
options are to replace the doors with solid ones (not an option
in my opinion.) Instead of having a turn handledead bolt deactivation,
have a dead bolt that is keyed on both sides. This will be a little
more effort on your part. You have to get the key to unlock the
door to go out. Oh yeah! don't be stupid and leave the key in
the lock. You are not gaining any protection for yourself this
way. It will slow the intruder down, because they have to make
a hole in the door big enough to fit though. Another option that
works in a similar way is a bar on the door. This is a bar that
jams under the handle of the door and extend to the floor by a
non slip pad that will bar the door.
The
more effort that you make an intruder have to make to get in,
the better chance they won't even try. There are many things that
you can do to protect yourself.
