Open
Floor Plans – small spaces feel large
Contemporary
designs thrive on the minimalist look, in interior design. In
architecture the same trend seems to be followed these days, with
open floor plans gaining tremendous popularity. This is primarily
because; people are getting used to the concept of ‘space’
psychologically, and thus want to put it to practice in their
physical aspects of life too. Open floor plans let people share
vast spaces, for multi-purpose activities, with minimal walls,
thus giving a space of vastness to the space. Following are some
of the ways in which open floor plans are executed –
• Minimal usage of walls
• Combining two areas together – Dining and living
for instance
• Large spaces with columns and pillars
• Tall ceilings
• Straight and simple lines
• Wood and stonework facades
• Split levels
• Flat or single pitched roofs
Thus these are basically the parameters followed, in open plans.
Decorating
a open floor plan
Following are some tips to follow while decorating a house with
an open floor plan –
1. The basic function of a open floor plan is to have maximum
breathing space, so avoid crowding the open space with furniture
and heavy sofas
2. If you use only 2/3rd of the wall space for the furniture and
use glass topped tables, rounded sofas and shallow wood, wrought
iron, the smaller room will appear bigger, and the look will be
uncluttered
3. Stick to straight lines and simple colors
4. Put your furniture closest to or against the highest wall.
5. Plants are a great replacement for heavy decoration.
6. Large windows and French doors compliment open floor plans
perfectly.
Follow
these tips for a complimentary design to the open floor plan,
and you will get a clean, no frills look, that you are looking
for.
One
of the biggest problems of open floor plans is to give a distinct
look to the different areas that are not separated by doors and
walls. Thus care must be taken that the home does not look monotonous
and there is a separation between two different functional areas.
