With the clean, sophisticated lines, Roman blinds, or Roman shades as they are often known, are one of the most stylish ways to dress up a window. They can be used as a stand alone window treatment fitted outside the window or fitted inside the window recess and united with curtains and top treatments for a layered look. Roman blinds are most excellent made from light to medium weight fabrics and are usually lined.

Measurement of the roman shade

Fix the shade trail or wooden batten in the chosen position. If the shade is to be hanged inside the window recess, fix it to the underside of the window frame. If the shade is to be hanged outside the recess, fix it to the top of the window frame or above it. You should also attach the adhesive side of the Velcro to the front edge of the wooden batten. To calculate the length of the fabric needed measure from the top of the track or batten to the chosen length. Also add the relevant hem allowances for the style of blind to be made. Also allow extra length for pattern matching where necessary. The length of lining needed will be the same as the fabric requirements minus any extra for pattern matching.

More of the making

To determine the width of the fabric required, measure the length of the track or batten and add the relevant amount of seam allowance for the style of Roman blind to be made. Divide the number by the width of the fabric to be used and round up to the next whole number. This whole number will determine the number of widths of fabric required. Allow an extra 1" (2.5 cms) for each seam when combining widths together and make sure a full width is positioned in the centre with equal part widths added at each side. The number of widths of lining needed will be the same as the number of widths of fabric.
