Plumbing Snake

Plumbing snake refers to the long flexible steel coil used by plumbers to remove blockages from curved pipes. It is also popularly called plumber's snake. The plumbing snake is a very helpful tool in plumbing.

A plumbing snake may come in various shapes, sizes and lengths. The plumbing snake has a flexible wire shaft with a head on the end fashioned as an auger. There is also included a mechanism for turning the snake while it winds through the pipe.

Using plumbing snake

The plumbing snake can be used effectively for removing clogs from drains. However, it needs to be used with proper care. Non-slip should be put on hands since the plumbing snake may become slippery and dirty in the process. You should start off with using the smallest snake first. Then if this does not work proceed with using those of larger sizes.

The end opposite to the handle is to be inserted into the drain or toilet. Then the handle of the plumbing snake is to be turned clockwise gradually pushing the snake into the pipe. It is helpful to fill the sink or toilet bowl with some quantity of water when the clog begins to break up. This helps provide lubrication and pressure to help remove the clog breaking up. When you face difficulty turning the handle then you need to take the snake out, clean its end and then again insert it in the same way as before. This can be done for a number of times till the drain is properly cleared.

Care while using plumbing snake

Motorized plumbing snakes need to be carefully handled especially while the snake is being retrieved from the drain. There may be accidental whipping around of the plumbing snake and striking while it comes out of the pipe.

The tip of the plumbing snake should be shaken inside the toilet bowl or sink for cleaning it. Using the flush or opening the faucets of sinks further helps clean the tip of the plumbing snake.
