Paradise Orchids - Dendrobiums

The Dendrobium orchid is a most elegant tribute to the image of Hawaii as a paradise and has for centuries symbolized love, tenderness, joy and friendship. But, to a florist, the Dendrobium symbolizes much more, not just convenience of use and length of vase life, but versatility as well. The cascading sprays and delicate beauty of Dendrobium which is the quintessential flower of the tropics enhance occasions from the everyday to the extravagant. Dendrobium orchids thrive on the Big Island of Hawaii which is also known as the "Orchid Island."

How to cut Dendrobium Orchids:

To retain a Dendrobium's radiance for two weeks, these healthful hints should be followed:
Unpack the flowers immediately.
Trim about 1/2 inch off the stems.
Place the flowers in a clean vase filled with clean water or a commercial floral preservative.
If the Dendrobiums are wilted upon unpacking, simply submerge whole sprays for 10 to 15 minutes in cool tap water.
Dendrobium orchids are slightly sensitive to ethylene so to avoid ethylene buildup, ensure adequate ventilation and sanitary conditions.
The ideal storage conditions for Dendrobium orchids: These tropical treasures stay their loveliest when held in water and at about 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Holding Dendrobiums for more than a week at temperatures below 45 degrees Fahrenheit can cause flowers to discolor or drop.

Dendrobium Orchid Plants:
The exotic Dendrobium orchid is grown in Hawaii under natural conditions. The orchid plant will thrive well in normal household conditions and no green house is necessary.

Light Requirements:
Strong light (over 2,000 foot-candle) is recommended for artificially lighting Dendrobiums. Inadequate light levels result in spindly stems and thin leaves with few or no flowers. East or west windows in the summer and autumn and south windows in the winter and early spring will give plenty of light for the Dendrobiums to grow well.

Temperature Requirements:
A temperature range of 90 to 65ƒ F is ideal for most hybrids. If temperature exceeds 90ƒ F for extended periods, reduce light slightly so plants do not overheat. Lowering temperatures during blooming will make the flowers last longer.

Watering and Fertilizer Requirements:
For best flowering, regular watering and fertilizing are needed. Roots of Dendrobiums cannot tolerate wet conditions for long resulting in root rot. Dissolve half a teaspoon of a soluble fertilizer in one gallon of water and use this fertilizer water at each watering when there is active growth. Use it at every second or third watering when there is no active growth. Allow the excess water to drain away after each watering.
