Orchid, is the popular name for members of Orchidaceae, a family of perennial herbs which are distributed widely in both hemispheres. This unusually large family of some 450 genera and an estimated 10,000 to 17,500 species, includes terrestrial, epiphytic, and saprophytic (subsisting on decomposing material) genera. Although the latter may sometimes lack chlorophyll, none of them is actually parasitic. Orchids grow most abundantly in tropical and subtropical forests being largely epiphytic. The temperate genera thrive in all kinds of shaded habitats except the excessively dry or cold ones. Most temperate orchids and all those of Arctic are terrestrial orchids.

Various Orchids are native to the land of Guyana. These include the white coloured Sobralia valida, the purple coloured Sobralia oliva-estevae and Epistephium duckei, the brown spotted, yellow Rudolfiella bicornaria. Then there is the undescribable Brassia (often confused with B. verrucosa) and the light purpulish Epistephium subrepens which are also found in Guyana. The white and yellow vanilla bicolor, the pinkish Cleistes rosea ans Zygosepalum labiosum are few other native orchids of Guyana. Amongst others seen in the forests of Guyana are Epidendrum carpophorum, Gongora pleichroma, Bollea violacea and Galeottia jorisiana.
