Ceramic Tile Cutters

Ceramic tile cutters are versatile, professional hand tools that make convenient the work of cutting holes, angles and straights in most types of ceramic tiles. They are hand operated and work by scoring the ceramic glaze with a sharp tungsten carbide wheel and then breaking the tile cleanly along the resultant line of weakness.

How to use Ceramic Tile Cutters:

It is recommended that you practice with some scrap tile for a few times before starting your project. Straight ceramic tile cutters are designed to cut fired clay glazed ceramic tiles. Stone tiles, fully vitrified porcelain tiles, and some types of unglazed clay tiles may not cut properly with this type of cutter. For these types of tiles, you will need a quality wet saw to make these types of cuts.

First, align the marked tile with the arrow on the tile cutter. Then, place the guide into position and tighten it securely to hold tile in place. You can also keep the guide in place if multiple cuts of the same size are needed.
Then, hold handle firmly and place scoring wheel on outermost edge of the tile. Push it down slightly and pull the handle towards yourself until the entire length of the tile has been scored. The ceramic tile should have an unbroken scratch from one edge to the next.
Lastly, pull handle forward to the top edge of the tile and press down on handle. The tile should break along the marking that has been scored.

Other useful tips for Ceramic Tile Cutters:

Before using ceramic tile cutters, the guide bar and scoring wheel should be oiled and the scoring wheel should be replaced as soon as it gets worn so as to keep clean cuts. Ceramic tile cutters make cutting tiles very convenient and keep the cut lines straight and square. The cutters first score the surface of the glazed tile and then using the cutter handle and your arm pressure the tile can be easily snapped into two pieces exactly at the scored line. A glass cutter can also be used to score tile and large nail can be placed under the tile to break it. Tile cutters can be rented at almost all rental stores, home centers and flooring stores.
