Mass
Storage Devices - Get your stuff under control
In the computerization
world, mass storage devices refer to various advanced techniques
where devices are used for storing large amount of data. In 1804
the storage devices used were punched paper cards used for controlling
silk-weaving looms. Now the modern storage devices are disk drives
and tape drives. These devices refer to temporary storage devices
that are within the computer. Mass storage devices retain the
data even when the computer is turned off.
Different types of mass storage devices are:
• Floppy disks: are relatively slow having
small capacity but they are portable and inexpensive.
•
Hard disks: are very fast and have large capacity compared
to floppy disks but are very expensive. Very few hard disk systems
are portable but most of them are not.
•
Optical disks: are not as fast as compared to hard disk
but has a large storage capacity. Optical disk system uses electromagnetism
to encode data and also uses laser to read and write data. The
read-only optical disk drives are inexpensive while read/write
is expensive.
•
Tapes: can have large capacities of data but are relatively
inexpensive and it does not permit random access of data. These
are less portable.
Mass storage
devices can be called as Auxiliary devices also.
This mass storage is measured in kilobytes (1,024 bytes), megabytes
(1,024 kilobytes), gigabytes (1,024 megabytes) and terabytes (1,024
gigabytes).
Interfacing
mass storage devices:
Every device in a computer system must have some means of interfacing
the computer system and mass storage devices too have interfaces.
The mass storage device drivers can be used with a wide range
of USB devices because drivers are really an interface between
the USB stack and SCSI layer.
Managing
storage devices:
The time spent on over seeing the storage devices on the system
depends upon the number of users on the system and how they use
the system resources. Therefore large number of users and resources
need lots of care and feeding. It is very essential to take back
up of the storage device that restores. While copying large files
the value of limit may require to be changed to as large as or
larger than the character count of the largest file. Different
types of mass storage devices are mainly compared according to
their storage capacity, speed, price and portability.
Just
a few thoughts as you are organizing your garage. There are many
more garage articles in our garage

It's
all about the work bench.
If your work bench is not what you need, you will get nothing
done.
A
productive garage, is not a messy one.
There is nothing slowing progress down like a mess, or excessive
