Ladder Defects - take a second for safety

It is absolutely necessary to identify ladder defects to avoid any kind of accidents or mishaps. The ladders should be well maintained and put to ladder test at regular intervals otherwise there could be possibility of undue accidents. As it is in a recent survey it was found that nearly 225,000 accidents happen each year that are directly related to ladder or the better to say due to the misuse or mishandling or negligence associated with ladder.

There are certain points to be remembered and exercised while searching for ladder defects.

To find a ladder defect you will have to get hold of one pair of strong saw horses of around 3 ft. in high).

You will need few sand bags weighing around 20 - 50 lb. each. You have to pour the weighted sand in plastic bags to stop leakage.

Then you have to standardize a measurement system.

The next step of identifying ladder defect is to use leather straps, nylon webbing or heavy canvas. According to NFPA "These straps are used to hang the sand bags from the rungs so all the weight is not in one spot. We suggest nylons traps with a large loop sewed in both ends so the strap is easy to loop around the rungs and then you can hang your sand bags with a loop of rope or a bent steel S hook."

Then you have to use a piece of Plywood support the sand bags for detecting the ladder defects.

After this you have to chart the whole thing and register the result, therefore you must prepare a log to register once you have started identifying the ladder defects. His form may follow the NFPA method to operation or you can prepare it in accordance to your needs.

Once the process of identification of ladder defects is completed, it is absolutely necessary to chalk out the ladders that are found to be wanting. Those ladders that could be mended should be sent to the manufacturer for mending while the ladders with defects should be promptly destroyed to avoid probable accidents.
