Information on how to stain a patio deck:
For the Henderson's their patio was their pride. They have alcoves and dainty little seats in their patio. To make it look nice, they painted it a dusky brown color. Unfortunately, the paint was not for the patio and parts started peeling off, much to the Henderson's' chagrin. A friend told them that patios don't need to be painted. In fact, they would wonderful if they are stained. Especially, if they use concrete stains for a concrete patio like the Henderson's' have. A patio is nothing but an interior courtyard or a paved backyard area. Nevertheless, since it can cover large areas, some people believe that patios can change the way their entire house looks. Paint, since it is superficial will form a film and hence peels off. Stains go within the concrete and stain it beyond the surface. A good quality stain lasts for five years. And stains fade and don't peel off. Therefore, visually too they are much better looking than paint. Types of Concrete Stains: The three types of concrete stains are acid-based stain, solvent-based stain, and water-based stains. The first one - acid-based stain - has an acid chemically attaching to the concrete surface. In this staining the color actually seeps into the concrete to become a part. It is known as the best staining method. The stain using a solvent again permeates through the concrete pores. The surface of the concrete goes a long way in deciding how the stain will appear when it dries. A patio that is cleaned with a broom is more absorbent to the stain than a smooth glistening surface. The water-based stain is environmentally friendly. It can produce some nice shades. This stain uses acrylic elements to fix the color to the concrete. Tips to Remember: 1. Remember to get the right kind of stain. Some stains tend to leave a film on the concrete surface. 2. Use rubber gloves while you are applying the stain on the patio. 3. Before you start staining, remember to remove the sticky grease and oil stains by hosing it down with a pressure washer. If need be, use a degreaser too. 4. For best results let the stain dry for 48 hours. Later, brush off any extra stain or powder that may lie on the surface. 5. Applying a second coat may do wonders to the final effect of the staining. But remember to wait long enough for the first paint to dry off completely before applying the next coat.
