Deck stain colors:

All Decked-Up!

Choosing the right deck color for your garden deck can be a task indeed for most do-it-yourself owners. Painting your home or garden or your garden deck on your own can be a fulfilling experience but there are too many things that can go wrong in the activity.
There are a few things that one must know in the painting of the deck.

The Right Color

It would be advisable to choose the right color based on your own perception, reading a few books on color theory, and getting an expert's advice. The following three parameters come across strikingly in coloring your deck: the number of application, the correct shade, and the tools for coloring.

Color of Shade

The first thing to do is confirm the color of shade you want to color your deck with. Remember, the faded color on someone's yard may look different than the one in the can. It is always good to trust the shade card or the color represented on the can.

Number of Applications

A paint job can look really shabby if you over-paint or under-paint it. To paint it right, you would need to understand a few fundamentals of painting. Most contractors feel that the more number of coats, the better. That is truly not correct. Most deck paints penetrate the surface of the wood. Over-coating can lead to a formation of one thick layer. This layer can peel off and can make your deck look tawdry.
In case of water-repellant products, over application can lead to overly waxy or sticky surfaces. These surfaces take a long, long time to dry and impressions can form on them easily.

Tools for Coloring

The two most important tools for coloring are the deck brush and the deck sprayer. From your garage try to fish out an old rod from an old bicycle or some unused stick. This could work as a stirrer. Overalls and napkins make the package complete.
The first two tools are the most critical of the lot and require you to pay special attention in choosing these. Pay attention to your garden and deck needs and accordingly choose from the variety available in the market.
If you are using a mix of colors for your deck and fence, try to apply the paint on the fence first and then begin with the deck. The vertical paint is likely to drip over the deck.
