Steps in Application of Stain:

Surface preparation is essential for achieving maximum durability. Allow deck to dry thoroughly. Experts recommend a period of 5 day drying before coat. Use moisture meter to check the water content of wood.
1. If any areas of the deck have started to splinter or crack scrub thoroughly with sand paper to remove any dead wood fibers and till new layer of wood is visible.
1. Then clean with brush to remove debris.
1. Area to be coated must be clean, dry, and free of dirt, mildew, oil, or grease. Remove contaminants or chalky residue from weathered painted surfaces by washing with Bejamin Moore clean multipurpose cleaner.
1. Remove scales, flakes, or peels from previously stained or painted decks by scraping or by coating with Bejamin Moore Remove.
1. Decide on the floor pattern and its placement. Try to work with natural lines of wood.
1. Use knife to carve pattern. Do not carve deeply but enough to make pattern visible.
1. Cover the patterned area with tape.
1. Apply selected stain in remaining area.
1. Coat vertical area first, Apply as little stain as possible with brush.
1. Apply the stain to entire unit of board else there will be lap marks.
1. Followed by application in horizontal area.
1. In patterned area start with the lightest color first and gradually move towards darker color.
1. Apply stain to the edge of patterned lines.

Useful Tips:

If brushing two different colors which are close, start with lighter color.
Always coat the elevated areas of pattern first. Dribbles stain from elevated pattern may spoil the lower finished surface.

Recommendations:

1. Previously Stained, Painted, or Sealed Wood:
Primer: No priming necessary.
Finish: Single coat Bejamin Moore stain

2. To prevent premature cracking and peeling, do not apply more than two coats.
New Wood or Properly Prepared Weathered Wood: Acrylic Primer Bejamin Moore

3. Two topcoats are recommended for redwood and Cedar, a coat Bejamin Moore of Acrylic Alkyd Primer should be used before top coating.
