Preparation of surface: Surface preparation is a key to the successful staining and long lasting durability of stained surface. 1. If any areas of the deck have started to splinter or crack scrub thoroughly with sand paper to remove any dead wood fibers and till new layer of wood is visible. 2. Clean off dirt, grease and oil with detergent. 3. Allow deck to dry completely. 4. Remove mildew stains with BehrÆ no. 62 multi-surface deck-prep cleaner & mildew stain remover or with one part bleach and three parts water. 5. Behr no. 63 wood cleaner brightener conditioner to bring back natural luster of wood. 6. Scrubbing with sand paper or with chemicals can clean already painted surfaces. Remove finish from stained or clear sealed wood with Behr no. 64 15 minute quick fix deck finish remover & wood resurface. Apply with Behr no. 63 wood cleaner brightener conditioner to clean the wood and return it to its natural luster. 7. Test absorbency of all wood being stained by sprinkling a few drops of water on the surface. If water is absorbed into the surface within a few minutes, the surface is ready for product application after cleaning. if the water continues to stay on top of the surface, stripping is necessary. Use Behr 64 15 minute quick fix for that. 8. Allow wood to dry completely before applying stain. Stir stain before and at intervals during application. 2. Test on a small spot on the wood surface for color. 3. Apply Behr stain with brush or with a pad applicator. a quantity of 250-300 sq. ft. per gallon should be used for better results. Stain can also be applied with roller or spray. 6. Allow all surfaces to dry for 24-48 hours. 7. Allow at least 24 hours before using deck. Frequency of applications: it will depend on the use of surface. Horizontal surfaces, which have heavy foot traffic and collect debris, will have a life of two years. Sun exposed surfaces too require application of stain every 2 years. Vertical structures such as fence or siding require application of stain every 3 years only. Warning 1. Stained surfaces are likely to be slippery when wet. take precautions while walking on wet stained surface. 2. Replace badly cracked or warped boards. 3. Protect eyes while scrubbing with sand paper. 4. Use a mask to prevent grains of sand or debris from entering respiratory tract. 5. If stain comes in direct contact with skin, wash off with soap and water immediately. 6. If you experience difficulty in breathing, leave the area to obtain fresh air. if continued difficulty is experienced, get medical assistance immediately. 7. In case of eye contact, wash immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes.
