Stone Fireplace Mantels

Stone fireplaces are known for their timeless and natural look. Stone was one of the first materials used in the 16th century. Stone mantels are slightly more expensive than the other types. The cost varies with the kind of stone chosen. Limestone is fairly inexpensive and marble is costlier. Stone fireplaces can be intricately carved or engraved to give an ornate look. Stone can be used for the entire fireplace or for particular parts only.

Types of stone mantels

Cast stone mantel

Cast stone is a kind of fine concrete made by scientists. It looks like expensive stone in different colors and styles. It appears like limestone as it contains small quantities of crushed limestone. It possesses a neutral look which blends with all designs. Cast stone is extremely graceful. It can be teamed up with a surround, though it is elegant enough to stand alone. Cast stone is durable and versatile and it can replace natural cut stone. Cast stone is better than natural stone as it is more consistent and can be reinforced with steel to make it stronger. Various colors can be obtained by addition of aggregates and mineral oxides.

Granite stone mantel

Granite is the hardest material used. It is long lasting and scratch, stain and heat resistant. It is hugely popular due to its availability in a wide array of colors, textures and styles.

Sandstone and Limestone mantels

Sandstone imparts a country look when laid with a mortar joint. It has smooth and rounded edges. Limestone is porous and also provides a rustic look. Limestone is generally reinforced with white Portland cement. This imparts durability and fade resistant color. High quality Spanish limestone is in popular demand. They can be designed to give an antique finish.

Marble fireplaces

Marble fireplaces are an emerging vogue among international buyers. They can be handcrafted to meet personal demands .They are available in both modern-day and conventional designs. Marble fireplaces are also used exclusively for aesthetic purposes. Italian and Portuguese marble fireplaces are in great demand. Marble enables elaborate carvings and asymmetrical designs.
