Do It Yourself Patio

Patios enhance the beauty, comfort and value of a home. If one would like to build a patio there are a myriad of do-it-yourself kits available in the market. Most of them offer popular, visually pleasing home improvement products. DIY patio cover kits and patio room enclosure kits increase property value, add outdoor living space, and provide homeowners with an attractive, unique maintenance-free sanctuary from the blazing sun or pouring rain at the same time saving them thousands of dollars from paying the professionals to do the same job.

Equipment needed for a DIY patio project

Apart from the do-it-yourself kit which will contain all the plans and some of the material, you will need to include in your tool kit a circular saw, power drill, galvanized deck screws, chalk line, tape measure, adjustable wrench, safety goggles, jigsaw, reciprocating saw, pneumatic nail gun kit that can be rented, gloves and mask, level, framing square, speed square, masonry drill bit, hammer and a utility knife. Before you start to build your deck, you'll need a temporary worktable. For that, you'll need a couple of sawhorses, which can be built out of scrap lumber.

Selection of materials for the Patio

Make sure to draw up a set of plans before you start to help in determining the amount of materials needed for the project. Once you have drawn up your plans and have al the material ready you can start on the deck. Select your lumber. Some outlets will let you pick out the boards for a deck project, but it is always advisable to have an understanding with the retailer that you can return any warped or unacceptable boards or lumber that may not be used up in the course of the project. Pick lumber that is straight with as few imperfections as possible and have the lumber delivered close to the job site.

Location of patio and other aesthetic factors

You must decide what you will be have on the deck, such as a hot tub for instance, You will have to build the foundation accordingly. Building a patio will involve a lot of carpentry and hard labor. Though you will have all the instructions laid out for you right from scratch it is always advisable to have the advise of an engineer when it comes to the technicalities. When all is done, which would mean a week or more, it will be good to stand back and admire your work and think about the cash you have saved yourself by doing it yourself.
