Faux Painting Techniques - the way it is done

It is evident from the past history that human beings have always wanted to decorate their surrounding in some way or the other. The reason can be anything right from ritual and spirituality to simply enhancing the overall appearance of their environments. It can easily be witnessed the development of numerous techniques which are used to add depth and scope to any surrounding. From the pre historic times till recently a lot of techniques have been employed to enhance living spaces in a very beautiful and unique manner. Faux painting is one such effective way of decorating a particular environment in a very attractive pattern.

Faux painting is done with a number of techniques each having its own quality of finish and have a distinct process of painting. In the next few lines we will be discussing some of the most popular and effective faux painting techniques which are greatly in demand now a days:

• Ragging and stippling – Ragging and stippling are two different types of finishes which are very identical in terms of technique where a paint or glaze is applied and then applied with the help of either a brush, rag or newspaper. The surface of application of both the finishes should be well cleaned and a prepared surface. The ideal surface would be the one which is painted by two coats of latex primer.

• Dragging – The technique would be the best one which can be used to portray a very luxurious look in the bedroom, an elegant living room or a sophisticated and formal dinning room. The process involves simply pulling a dry brush or combing device through wet paint to revel fine lines or pinstripes of the base color.

• Sponging – It is one of the quickest, easiest and the most versatile form of faux painting technique which can be applied to almost any surface even particle board, and to ones astonishments the mistakes done during the process can be easily rectified.

• Color washing – This peculiar technique when applied can give the surface a very rustic country look but are versatile enough to set into any appropriate color scheme. The effect of this technique can be observed most effectively by using colors such as Venetian red, raw sienna and other natural, soft colors. Also this technique to work well must be built up in layers.

Along with all these techniques mentioned above, there are few others faux painting techniques which are in use now days. Hence from the above discussions it can be easily concluded that today one can have their home faux painted by choosing the appropriate technique and the desired colors.
