Faux
Painting Process - how to do it right!
What
is faux painting?
Before going towards what exactly is faux painting, we must know
the meaning of the word “faux”. The word is a French
word, which means "false", and the word aptly describes
the form of painting also. It is nothing but an art, which creates
an illusion of depth and density on painted walls, doors and ceilings.
The effects can also be seen on stone, parchment, and antiquarian.
The basics of faux painting basically demand that before starting
with the sponge, it should be made sure that the walls are clean
and the background color should be decide. It is believed b experts
that lighter colors are perfect for backgrounds for they show
through the paint so applied and creates a sense of depth or coarseness.
It is also advised that the background be painted with semi-gloss
or satin paint. This basically increases the desired effect f
depth and coarseness. Once all this is done, it is time to gather
all the so desired tools and equipments to begin with faux painting.
How
is faux painting done?
Generally, faux paintings use glazes that are applied over a base
coat that is of a solid color, in order to create texture along
with other special effects on walls. For preparing a wash or a
glaze first a latex paint color that coordinates with the color
of the wall should be selected. Then one part of this latex paint
and two parts of water should be mixed in a large vessel. The
mixture needs to be mixed well and is now ready to be applied
to the wall. While preparing the wash, the ratio of water to paint
can be varied depending upon the durability of the painted surface
so required. Sponging and ragging on of latex glazes is a good
option as they dry quickly and therefore experts advise against
dragging, stippling and striping. Acrylic and oil glazes can be
prepared using similar techniques. While doing the above activities
some things should be kept in mind. The first and the foremost
thing is that the paint and the products should be kept away from
children. Adequate ventilation should be ensured while mixing
the chemicals and also while applying the glazes or washes. The
labels and the warnings on all the chemical products should be
carefully read and understood.
