Faux
painting on wood paneling - drab to fab
Faux
painting today can be performed in almost any surface available
in the home or the surroundings. Dong faux painting over wood
paneling is just one of a kind of do it yourself type of job which
doesn’t require much efforts and can be performed effectively
with some attractive outcomes. One can paint or even do wall paper
kind of stuff over a wood paneling which appears equally radiant
and beautiful. If there is a proper understanding of the detailed
procedure and a sense of art then doing faux painting over a wood
paneling will not at all be a difficult task.
Procedure
of doing faux painting in a wood paneling
One very common and repeated point which comes attached to every
faux painting process is the stress of starting of with a very
neat and clean surface. The cleanliness of the surface can be
maintained by simply performing a good washing by using a sponge
mop or any other good degreasing cleaner followed by a rinsing
of clean water. This act will help the painter save a lot of grief.
Assuming that the panel which is to be faux painted consists of
grooves which must be getting rid of, the first task will be to
start filling them.
•
Filling the Grooves – The task needs a pail of
ready mixed joint compound, mud pan and 6" spackle knife,
80 grit sandpaper and a sanding pole. The mud pan should be first
aprrx. 1⁄2 full and then the knife edge should be loaded
with a 1” ribbon size bead of the mud. The knife should
be then lined up parallel to the grove with a bit of clocking
towards the painter so as to be in a slight angle and letting
it slide down the grove. The area in consideration should be about
2” long and 2” wide with mud all over the grooved
area. By putting the knife in the top of the mudded area so that
the wide part is at right angle to the groove, it should be dragged
down removing all the excess. The surface should be then allowed
to dry and then should be sanded with 80 grit sandpaper. The process
should be repeated one more time.
•
Priming – It’s considered to be a necessity
in the process of faux painting over the wood paneling. The stains
in the paneling are generally bleed through the top coat of paint.
A Zinsser 1-2-3 latex primer is the most recommended one for just
about everything. Once the priming of the surface is over then
the finish coat can be applied which can be nice satin or eggshell
enamel. These recommended paints look good on the painted paneling.
