Most
Common Ladder Accidents
In a recent
survey it was found that nearly 225,000 accidents happen each
year that are directly related to ladder or the better to say
due to the misuse or mishandling of the ladder.
John Drengenberg
warns the users saying 'The number of emergency room visits from
ladder-related injuries totals more than those for lawn mowers
and home workshop saws combined. Of course the ladder is dangerous
only if it is improperly used. So, whether you're standing on
a stepladder to change a light bulb in the living room or on an
extension ladder to clean out the gutters, a few precautions can
keep you safe around the home."
His point
of view should be noted because he is the manager of Consumer
Affairs at Underwriters Laboratories Inc., Northbrook, III. Underwriters
Laboratories Inc is a not-for-profit product safety testing organization.
The most common
ladder accidents occur while working at the vicinity of overhead
power lines or electricity.
Unclean and
moist rungs are another cause of accident.
Another form
of most common ladder accidents occurs if the ladder is not placed
on a firm, level surface. Setting the ladder on a muddy, uneven
or soft ground has proved to be another cause of ladder accident.
It often happens
that the user leaves the ladder totally unattended causing a room
for a probable accident.
Sometimes
it so happens that the user stretches a hand too much away from
the ladder wishing to reach something practically beyond the reach.
More often than not the basic balance of the ladder is disrupted
and eventually ends in a fatal accident.
There are
even reports that leaving the door unlocked while working at the
front of it on a ladder resulted in accident. If this sounds abnormal
then it is worthy to mention that statistically speaking this
type of accident comes within the range of most common ladder
accidents.
Climbing a
ladder with the user's hand full of different tools and articles
may cause fatal accident. This is another form of most common
ladder accidents.
Another high
frequency of most common ladder accidents occur while using a
step ladder. Here, if the spreaders are not open and specifically
locked an accident is bound to happen.
