The
modern home kitchen cabinets often look a bit shabby or unattractive
sometimes. The home owners then start worrying as to how give
that original charming look back to their kitchen cabinets. A
fresh coat of paint can perhaps do wonders both to the kitchen
cabinets as well as the spirits of all the home makers. To add
more to these wonders one can use faux finishing for the purpose
of painting kitchen cabinets. Faux painting if used to paint the
kitchen cabinets can give that extra ordinary feel to it which
can be noticed even at a single glance.
Tools
and materials required to faux paint the kitchen cabinet
Faux painting projects have its own set of requirements which
varies considerably from one project to another. However an in
general guide to the tools and materials needed in order to do
faux painting of the kitchen cabinet is as under:
• Tools and supplies at the time of preparation of the base.
• Primers
• Glaze
• Materials used for coating. Coating includes paint based
coats as well as top coats varnish, stain etc.
• Paint tray
• Brushes and rollers.
• Tools specified for that particular technique which includes
sponges, feathers, rags wood graining tools etc.
• Water bucket
• The use of acrylic paints and glazing liquids demands
the necessity of clean up cloths, rags, soap and water whereas
alkyd paints and glazing liquids needs mineral spirits.
• Rubber gloves.
Thus
the requirement of tools and materials will purely depend on which
type of faux finishing we want to use to paint the kitchen cabinet.
Procedure
in brief
The procedure simply involves applying a colored base coat, decorating
with another colored coating and at the end if necessary it should
be protected with a top coat. The choice of oil based or latex
based products should be made keeping in mind the surface to be
painted. Both the products have their own advantages and disadvantages
and hence should be selected cautiously. Similarly choice of primers
and base color coats should also be made very carefully. The glaze
and then finally the finished coat have to be accomplished. The
new water based polyurethanes used for the finish coats are the
best one available today.
