Do it yourself shelves
Guidelines for Adjustable DIY shelves Use a simple dado, cut in the side support for adjustable wood shelves. These can be inserted at any desired spacing to provide as many adjustments as required. An adjustable shelf requires a deeper concealed dado cut and for this, the shelf is notched in the front for concealing the dado cut. A pinned joint provides structural strength for long lengths of shelving so the supporting piece can be inserted or removed as required. Alternately, another manner of adjustable shelving can be done by making cuts at 90-degree and 45-degree angles, after which the shelf can be cut to the same 45-degree angle and fitted into the sawed slots. The only limitation to this style is that it cannot carry extremely heavy loads as the 45-degree cut in the end of the shelf slightly weakens the supporting strength of the shelf. If the shelving notches are carefully cut, they add to the aesthetic appeal of the shelves and inserting box units will improve appearance and functionality of the adjustable shelves. Do it yourself shelves- from scratch! With a 1x4 board of the desired length for the base, begin by drilling holes at desired intervals. These can be 3/4" bored at 3/4" intervals. After this is done, split the wood down the middle and mount it to provide end supports for the shelves. Each 1x4 piece, when drilled and split makes two shelf supports or adequate supports for one end of the shelf. To make supports for both ends of each shelf, drilling holes in exactly the same positions is required, so they match well once affixed to the wall. Careful sanding will ensure a neat finish. The same method can be used for making deep, sliding shelves for any kind of storage in closets and can be inserted with the long measurement going into the closet rather than spanning the closet width. For a snug fit into curved areas of shelf supports, the end of each shelf must be rounded and sanded.
