Finding Solutions for Yard Drainage -
If you are fortunate enough to have some fall to your yard, or a storm
water system that you can drain water into, you can easily find a solution
to yard drainage problems. All you have to do is go to a building supply
center and buy some 4" perforated plastic drain pipes. The best kinds
for this purpose are the flexible ones that come in 100' rolls. The drain
pipe should have small slits all around the pipe, which allow water to
enter the pipe so it can be carried away. Dig a trench from the center
of the low area that you are trying to drain, to the point that you intend
to drain it to. Then using a simple line level, set up a string over
top of the trench. This is done for making sure that your pipe runs down
hill all the way. Set the string up to level it, then measure from the
string to the bottom of your trench making sure you have constant fall.
The fall should be 6" for every 100' of pipe.
The highest point is the area that you are trying to drain. Your pipe
should go deep enough at this point so that it can be covered with soil.
Once the trench is done, just lay the pipe in. At the highest end of
the pipe, insert a strainer into the end of the pipe to prevent the soil
from entering the pipe. Then, cover the pipe with washed stone, and then
backfill the trench with some soil. The washed stone creates a void around
the pipe that helps the water to find its way into the pipe. The part
of the pipe that needs to be exposed is the low end, where all the water
exits the pipe. You don't need to put a strainer in that end.
