Lawn drainage -
Are you tired of poor drainage in your garden? If you have a high seasonal
water table, you may find that water sits on or close to the surface
during periods of heavy rainfall. If the structure of soil in your lawn
is heavy, this too can reduce soil permeability and lead to poor drainage.
Low points in the garden, also allow water to collect and drain poorly.
Walking on a poorly drained lawn when it is wet can further add to your
problems as wet soil compacts and loses its structure. So what do you
do? There are various ways to manage your lawn drainage. Two such drainage
techniques are mentioned below -
Single pipe drainage -
A plastic pipe 10ft in length and 4ins in diameter should be bought for
land drainage. It can be joined using some straight coupling pieces and
can be easily sawn to its length. The pipe has to be perforated to allow
water entering. Cut out the turfs and put them to one side - stack the
topsoil on a sheet of polythene for avoiding damage to the lawn.
Lay the pipe in the trench, about 1-2ft deep, with the holes facing downwards.
This will stop the soil and small stones from getting in the pipe, but
will let the water enter. Feed this pipe work to a soak-away at the lowest
point, so the water can easily drain away. The soak-away can be a very
simple affair that is a hole dug out 3ft deep x2ft x 2ft. Put brick rubble
and stones in the bottom for a depth of about 2ft. Then place 6 layer
of pea shingle or coarse sand and to finish add a layer of topsoil. End
the pipe in the center of the soak-away.
Herringbone drainage -
Another method of lawn drainage is herringbone drainage. But, it can
work out to be quite expensive. Thus, it is only necessary if the lawn
is waterlogged over the whole area. Then, using a line, first mark out
the main drainpipe from the highest to the lowest part of the lawn. Mark
the side drains that connect to the main pipe, to form a herringbone
pattern. The side drains should join the main pipe at a 45-degree angle.
Now, remove the turf carefully and place it onto one side. Later, dig
out the main and side trenches about 1ft wide and to a depth of 2 ft
6ins to 3 ft depending on the type of soil, to accommodate drainage pipes.
Lay the pipes on a bed of pea shingle and cover them completely with
pea shingle.
