Land drainage

Drainage:
The meaning of the term drainage is actually the process of removing fluid or anything like a wound cavity using the methods of suction or gravity. The term has its different meanings in the fields of medicine, agriculture, mining and even psychology. Psychologically speaking, drainage means releasing all the conflicts or other emotions in the mind by expressing them all. Drainage in agriculture means removing the excess water that exists in the soil of the agricultural farm. The task can be accomplished by using a system of surface ditches. Underground conduits are a good option too if the soil conditions and land contours permit. At times, Diesel or centrifugal pumps work well too. They are generally used in order to drain large agricultural lands. In mining, drainage is nothing but removing water that has seeped into shafts and the other mine workings.

Draining land:
In order to drain land, generally geotextile filters are used. The benefit is that they retain and prevent the very fine particles of the soil from clogging the drain by entering into it. They are basically synthetic fabrics that are prepared for the applications in civil and environmental engineering. While draining land, it is important that the soil particles allow the water particles to pass through. Course material like gravel, sea shells, stone and rock can be used to lay down along a trench used for the purpose of draining. Then it is time to fold the geotextile over the top of the stone and now the soil is covered. This is how the ground water seeps through the fabric and flows within trench. The benefits of drainage are many. However, the benefits of land drainage may also depend on how the farm is conditioned and managed after the job is done. The technique helps lower the unit cost of production and makes you more competitive. It reduces soil erosion and helps in the process of reducing the phosphorus content of streams. The yield of some crops like soybeans and corn increases by around one-third or half when draining is done. A properly drained soil carries more livestock per acre and the damage caused to the soil is lessened as compared to soil that is poorly drained.

Drainage System Maintenance:
Most of the subsurface clay tiles that were installed over 100 years ago have broken down because of freezing and thawing, been crushed from the weight of modern equipment and the overlying soil, or are clogged with sediment and plant residue....
