What is meant by drainage?

The word drainage basically refers to the process of removing a fluid or any other material or a wound cavity by making use of the techniques of suction or even gravity. The term has a variety of meaning and implications. It is used in the field of medicine, mining and it has an implication in psychology. Talking about the psychological aspect of it, the term means the process of releasing out all the conflicts or emotions that exist in the mind. The feelings can be of hatred, happiness, hostility or even guilt. Agricultural draining basically refers to the process of removing extra water that exists in the soil. A system of surface ditches is used to accomplish agricultural draining. To explore other options for the same, underground conduits can also be used. For using them, land contours and soil conditions play an important part. But in order to be able to use them, the soil conditions and the land contour have to be considered.
As far as mining goes, draining basically means the removal of water that seeps into the shafts and the other mine workings (that exist underground) from the surrounding areas. Drainage of mines helps prevent the problems to haulage and mining equipment.


How to go about draining your garden?

Problem arises when there are patches of water on the surface of gardens. In order to check the efficiency of land drainage, the best thing to do is to dig a 600mm hole along with a 300mm square followed by filling it with water. This should be left for around 24 hours. In this duration, if the water gets emptied, the soil is well drained otherwise not. On a piece of land that is very wet already, the hole may get filled with water. If in case the top soil is very poor, importing a new layer of top soil is a good idea. The type of drainage required by your garden actually depends on the nature and extent of the problem of drainage. Shaping up the garden surface so that the excess of water goes off, is a good idea for accomplishing garden draining. Such ditches can be of the depth 0.9m to 1.2m along with sloping sides. Underground pipes made of plastic, clay and others are used widely. Experts say that underground pipes should always be laid at a height above the water table of that particular place in order to prevent the pipes from moving the groundwater.
