Feng shui colors


Feng shui uses colors to bring a more positive kind of energy into the living space or work area in homes and offices. Feng shui literally means 'wind and water' and deals with placing and arranging of space to enhance natural energy flow for more peace and prosperity. Colors have negative and positive effects as well and the use of colors is an important feature of feng shui.

Feng shui colors and directions

There are eight main directions according to the principles of feng shui; namely south, southwest, southeast, north, northwest, northeast, east and west. Each of these directions also have specific colors assigned to them. For example, red is the best color for the south whereas white and gold colors are absolutely great for the west and northwest direction. The east and southeast require green color.

Importance of colors in feng shui

The color red signifies fire and heat in feng shui. Hence it is advised in areas that are involved in high-energy activity. Yellow gives a balance and brings a soothing effect on nerves. It also is known to stimulate joy, wisdom and creativity besides encouraging adaptability and flexibility. Orange is supposed to be a color of optimism, confidence and enthusiasm. Pink and magenta signify contentment. White represents harmony and purity. Green and blue are crisp and cool colors and used in bedrooms and bathrooms for a harmonious effect. However, it is important to remember that the use of any color in excess can result in negative energy as well. Proper consultation and implementation is of prime importance.

Colors are differentiated into warm and cool colors depending upon the qualities they possess. Accordingly feng shui experts may advise the use of a particular color in a particular area of the house such as the bedroom or the kitchen. The interior décor of the home or office may be enhanced in a positive way by using colors that are compatible to the flow of energy within the house and also result in a good and healthy living for the members of the family or the workers in the office.
