Feng shui
Nature plays an important role in everyday living. It is this fact that
is considered to be of prime importance in the practice of feng shui.
An ancient Chinese practice of placing things and arranging space within
a home or workplace, feng shui literally means 'wind and water'.
What is feng shui?
Pronounced as 'fung shway', feng shui seeks to bring harmony into the
living space. It is believed by practitioners of this system that there
is a natural force or energy that flows through all areas and spaces.
Accordingly, feng shui advises on the direction in which the house or
workplace should be built and how things should be placed within the
space to allow this energy to flow without any obstacles and bring peace
and prosperity to the people in the house or the office.
Some common rules observed in feng shui
Although a deep study of feng shui would involve a lot of time and energy,
there are certain rules that are followed by even those who may not want
to indulge too much into this system or who have already constructed
their homes and found it not conforming to the laws of feng shui. These
include avoiding clutter in the house or workspace, avoiding straight
lines and sharp corners for placing objects and the use of objects such
as mirrors, wind chimes and flowing water that are believed to have the
power of redirecting or reflecting the flowing energy in a space.
Why feng shui?
Although not many people may believe in the laws and rules of feng shui,
one cannot dispute the fact that many of guiding principles of practices
such as feng shui are actually very practical in nature. One does feel
good when there is no clutter in any area of the house. This, by itself,
would bring about a positive energy into the house. Direction of doors
and placing certain objects at particular places may also prove to be
useful enough. Many architects and planners now incorporate feng shui
when planning the construction of many buildings. Feng shui is now popular
not just in China but the entire world.
