Curbing aggression in humans:

Aggression is a disposition to behave aggressively, sport hostility and deliberately harm others. Aggression in humans can take many forms like physical abuse, mental abuse or random violent attacks.

Causes of aggression:

Psychologists and other scientists have come up with many theories on why aggression takes place. Some psychologists like Freud believe that aggression has its roots in a person's biological setup. While others believe in social, cultural and other external factors as prime causes of aggression. It is also believed that frustration leads to aggression. No single cause can however be held responsible for aggression, but a combination of psychological stressors like, anxiety, fear or physical illness and sociological factors like early upbringing, or modeling others can offer possible explanation. All these factors can lead to physical arousal leading to lash outs. However, all these causes of aggression will not actually lead to aggression, if the situation is not provocative in nature.

Curbing aggression:

Completely eliminating aggression is difficult if not impossible. However, aggression in humans can be controlled with the help of different techniques. The first step in treating aggression is related to the acceptance of the problem. Aggression treatment can work only when the person is ready. The age, the social class and other factors of the person also influence and shape up the process of controlling aggression. Taking into consideration all these factors, many techniques can be applied. One of them is 'Self talk.' The person can constantly engage in self-talk to recognize the aggressive situations and control his own anger. Another beneficial technique is that of catharsis. Catharsis means letting off the steam in a socially approved way. A highly aggressive person can for instance take part in competitive sports. However, it can sometimes aggravate the problem. Almost every aggression control program enlists the role of relaxation, meditation and regular physical exercise to curb aggression. Other beneficial tips include using cognitive restructuring, assertive training and using humor to change the magnitude of perceived hostility in others. Anger management programs can be conducted for people in the early stages of aggressive behaviour. However, in extreme cases counseling, group therapy sessions or help from a professional psychologist is essential.

Since aggression is responsible for crime and growing violence in the society, the issue of curbing aggression is of prime importance.
