Making Compost

The popularity of compost has increased and so has the technology of making it. Compost solves two of the major crises faced worldwide. It helps dispose of waste and provides healthy crops in an environment friendly way.

Methods Of Making Compost:

There are mainly two ways of making compost. First, is the highly passive way where you allow the organic waste to rot without any interference and second is the active way, where you lend your helping hand. Both the methods serve their own purposes. While passive way of composting is opted for its sheer propensity to dispose of waste, the active way is adopted for producing maximum amount of compost in less time for home or commercial use. Passive composting is done by collecting organic waste in a pile. After a year or two, the material breaks down and finally the compost is ready. Active composting however, allows you to have many options of composting. However, it involves hard work; compost is available for use in three to four weeks.

Material Used In Composting:

Apart from the techniques, planning is also required in deciding the material to be used in the organic pile as the speed of composting depends a lot upon the material used. Organic waste should have a healthy balance of nitrogen and carbon. Making the pile all at once and mixing it well can achieve this. Shredding the material also helps a lot as the organic waste then heats up quickly resulting in uniform compost.

Precautions:

To know whether the process is working it is important to make periodic checks on the temperature of the pile. This tells you a lot about the decomposition process. If the pile is warm or hot then there is nothing to worry. However, if it is not, then more nitrogen needs to be added to the pile. An ideal temperature of the pile is between 104 degrees F and 131 degrees F. Besides temperature, the moistness of the pile is also important. Too little or too much water can slow down the rate of decomposition. The air circulation in the pile must also be checked and in some cases, it needs to be oxygenated by using a pitchfork. Air circulation is very necessary for the aerobic microbes to do their job.

Conclusion

Sometimes while making compost, the untidy pile and resulting odour can be aversive, to combat this problem various equipments like compost bins, and other handy devises can be used.
