Making a Compost Bin
Compost is organic waste from your garden and household that is transformed
into a nutrient-rich fertilizer by the action of innumerable microbes.
Since this starting organic material is messy, it is advisable to contain
it in a holding unit. A Compost Bin is a simple structural accessory
that saves space and accelerates decomposition. Numerous simple and complex
Compost Bins, made of plastic, wood and metal, are available commercially.
Types of Bins:
However, a simple inexpensive Compost Bin can be made at home. For the
price-conscious, (A) recycling an old trash can into a Compost Bin is
the perfect answer:
1. Punch holes in the trash can for instant aeration.
2. Dump your organic matter in a 30:1 ratio of browns and greens into
the trash can.
3. Spray water on the organic material to make it damp.
4. Place lid on can.
5. Place filled trash can on bricks to prevent rusting.
6. Turn the can often; lay it on sides and roll it around to mix materials.
Alternately, yank the lid off and use garden fork to mix material.
7. Harvest finished compost in 3-4 weeks.
(B) Another simple compost bin requires a 12-15 foot length of wire fencing
material. Simply tie the ends together with wire to make a round hoop.
Untie hoop for easy removal of finished compost. Cost averages around
$20.
(C) Four fence posts of equal length, dug into the ground to form a square,
and surrounded by wire fencing, make a simple compost bin. Wire should
be left loose on one side for easy removal of finished compost. Cost
averages approximately $20.
(D) Complex two and three chamber bins, made of wood and wire, can also
be constructed from treated timber but they require extensive carpentry
skills. The cost factor is steep, over $150-200.
Obviously making a compost bin requires forethought. Individual preferences
override other considerations. Some will opt for a converted trash can
while others may build large two and three chamber bins. Whatever your
choice, it is mandatory that your compost bin allows for good air and
water infiltration, plus easy loading and removal, which are the basic
principles for successful composting.
