How to make compost -A step by step guide to Easy Composting
Making compost from household and garden waste is an easy task requiring
minimum effort and little investment. Think of the ecological benefits
that accrue - saving of landfill space and minimizing of pollution. Besides,
the usage of compost in your garden will act as natural fertilizer to
give your plants that extra green zest.
What to Compost:
The best news is that anything and everything that is household and garden
waste is conveniently compost able. Leaves and weeds act as activators
that speed up composting.
Household material like
1. tea leaves,
2. coffee grounds,
3. cardboard
4. egg boxes
5. vegetable leavings
6. And leftover food can all be added to your compost heap.
Use your imagination to whip up waste material, what you think is nonbiodegradable
may actually be an excellent source for composting. When this conglomeration
of waste rots, it produces superb natural fertilizer.
Two Methods:
1. You could opt for the easy no-investment Hot Heap Compost route or
spend a little money for the Cool Heap method. The former just demands
you keep adding your waste to a heap, which while fermenting may give
off an offensive smell. It is important to water the heap. As the waste
rots and turns into compost, you remove the lower layers and use it as
fertilizer in the garden.
2. Or you could purchase a Compost Bin and then add your waste in layers.
This is the Cool Heap method. With a compost bin you must mix tough and
soft items in equal measure and then water it periodically. You may also
be required to purchase a commercial activator to diffuse the stink.
This compost is likely to be more consistent than the one obtained through
the Hot Heap method.
Composting can be fun. It is actually a low investment, long term benefit
activity that should be adopted by every household with an ecological
conscience. Natural composting was the norm in the 19th century before
the advent of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Let's not forget that
this organic biodegradable waste is the best food for your flower and
vegetable beds, and fruit trees. It is not too late to embrace this traditional
practice of turning daily waste into potentially fertile green agents.
