There are countless advantages associated with compost. It is an environment
friendly substitute for harsh fertilizers. It also takes care of rubbish
from your home in a natural way. The biggest benefit is that it is cheap
yet nourishing.
Before beginning to compost, it is necessary to know the material that
can safely be used for making compost. Material like green stuff, bird
manure, weeds, etc also known as activators and slow cookers like sawdust,
wood shavings etc. can be used to compost very effectively. While, material
like meat, cooked food, newspapers etc. are best avoided.
The next issue is related to the equipment. Strictly speaking, you don't
need any material for composting apart from basic gardening equipment
like a pitchfork. However, if you want to keep your garden neat and odour
free, you will have to invest in equipment like compost bins, compost
tumblers, and containers and so on.
To make any kind of compost three essential things, air, water and food
are required. If the proportion is imbalanced, the process of composting
can slow down dramatically.
There are three basic methods of making compost, the traditional method,
which is considered time consuming, rapid method where fungus activators
are used and bio-enriched method, which involves fungus activators and
nitrogen fixing bacteria. No matter which method you choose, there are
some basic steps of making compost.
The first step is to choose the location of your compost site. Mostly,
area where there is good water drainage and which is shaded is considered
as an ideal location for composting. The second step is choosing the
material. There should be a good mixture of greens, which have high nitrogen
and browns, which are rich in carbon. Brown should be piled at the bottom
and then green. Finished compost is added on the top. Food scraps should
be in the center of the pile. Regularly the pile should be checked for
moisture and air. Air needs to be added to the pile. The last step is
using the compost. Use the dark brown compost by spreading it in and
around your plants.
With a little bit of patience and application of new technology, composting
can be made fun and easy.
