Compost Wooden Bin
Every year millions of tons of green waste - the figure is as high as
40% of total waste - finds its way to landfills. An ecological alternative
would be to compost this green organic household and garden waste. A
compost heap or a simple compost pile might encounter objections from
local health authorities. In this scenario, an inexpensive Compost Wooden
Bin is the ideal solution. A Wooden Compost Bin allows the organic material
to be properly mixed and layered, thus speeding up the composting process.
How to make Simple Wooden Compost Bins:
A wooden compost bin may either be purchased from garden centers or be
home assembled. A home-made wooden bin requires minimal carpentry skills.
It is simple to make and cost-effective.
The basic version requires that you drive four wooden posts into the
ground to make square 90cm x 90 cm. Nail wooden slats along three sides
of the posts, leaving the fourth loose for access. Use a piece of old
carpet as a lid. Your wooden bin is ready.
Another simple version, albeit movable - the stackable wooden bin - requires
identical wooden interlocking sections which are stacked on one on top
of the other. It is a flexible composting system; when the volume of
compost decreases, top sections of the bin can be removed and used to
start a new bin. This compost bin should be at least 75x75x75cm. These
dimensions may be adjusted to suit individual preferences. Further, there
is no need to purchase treated wood; even old timber such as floorboards,
fence wood, and pallets will do.
Advantages:
1. The advantage of a wooden compost bin is that it keeps the rain and
pests out.
2. It looks neat, holding the compost in a single manageable unit.
3. Again, it is low investment, costing a mere $25 and requires little
upkeep. 4. Since wood breathes, automatic aeration is also assured.
5. Easy access is permitted; the composting pile can be turned often
with a fork to increase the composting pace.
A Wooden Compost Bin is simple to assemble, can be made momentarily from
recycled wooden slats into a long-lasting composting unit.
