Compost Tumblers
Using compost greatly improves your garden. One way of composting is
by using compost tumblers. Compost tumblers are drum like devises in
which organic material is stored and turned from time to time. The reason
for turning compost is to aerate it. It is also done to generate heat,
which in turn kills pathogens and stimulates bacterial movement.
How it works.
In tumblers heat and oxygen is distributed equally meaning, that organic
material chops itself up in small pieces. The quality of such compost
is very superior and commercially profitable. Usually, containers are
partially filled with organic waste like green vegetables. They are turned
daily to mix the ingredients and aerate them. Care is taken not to fill
the containers full as the ingredients may have difficulty in tumbling
and mixing. If all goes well, compost may be ready in three weeks or
so.
Types of compost tumblers
Compost tumblers are available in various shapes and sizes. However,
there are four main categories. They are crank operated drums, center
axel drums, base rolling drums and roll around sphere. The most common

devise and lids through which more organic material can be added. The
drums also require hole for ventilation.
