Compost Containers
Unlike the past, today, composting can be done without major hassles.
One method of facilitating composting comes in the shape of compost containers.
Compost containers are usually containers with lids that store organic
waste until it can be taken to the compost bin. This is the best way
of storing waste in small areas of the garden or near a kitchen. Periodically,
as you keep adding waste to it, a systematic check can be done on your
compost. The top of the container is covered by practically anything
tight, like plastic or even an old carpet. This helps keep the moisture
and unwanted heat away leading to faster composting.
Making compost containers:
Compost containers are readily available in the market. But to minimize
this cost you may prefer to make them at home. Usually any container
with tight fitting lid can serve the function as effectively as any commercial
container. However care should be taken to see to it that the container
is made of plastic or metal that can effectively store a galleon or two
of organic waste. It should also be easy to handle. Some ways of making
containers include plastic bins with ventilation holes or plastic bins
without ventilation, rotating drums, metal drums etc. they can also be
made from chicken wires or bricks.
Compost containers- pros
There are many advantages of using compost containers. They confine the
size of the compost. Thus, compost is managed properly. Also as compared
to the heaps of compost, compost containers are more attractive, not
to mention more easy to handle. They are cheap and almost any material
can be used to make it. They are highly durable, though the lid may need
to be changed after a couple of years. They provide weather protection
and keep away inquisitive animals from your precious compost.
Compost containers- cons
Compost containers are not without disadvantages. Commercial Compost
containers tend to be slightly heavy on the pocket while homemade containers
are at risk for being inadequately constructed. This can sometimes be
the case for novices. They may also reduce airflow-causing slowing down
of composting process.
After taking into account the advantages and disadvantages you may conclude
that compost containers can be used effectively for assisting the process
of composting.
