Compost Container
Compost Containers make your composting process tidier and neater. They
hold the organic waste in manageable, compact proportions which speed
up the composting process. Furthermore, they allow your compost heap
to be contained in a small area of your garden. Compost Containers can
be either home built or purchased. Whatever your choice, an ideal Compost
Container should allow proper heat formation, aeration and moisturization
for perfect compost making.
Qualities:
Several commercial Compost Containers are available in the market. Commercial
containers are usually constructed of recycled plastic, wood or metal.
Alternately, you can build your own Compost Container. When shopping
for a Compost Container or building one at home, adhere to a few of these
basic rules:
1. Strength: The Compost Container should be strong enough to withstand
constant interference from forks, shovels and other garden equipment.
2. Weight: It should be light enough to be portable so you can move it
around the garden, but should not be flimsy.
3. Size: The usual norm is a Container that holds between 200-300 litres
of waste. However, refrain from constructing or purchasing overly large
containers that might be too tall for convenient use.
4. Lid: It should have a lid for easy filling and removal. Compost Containers
usually have a removable bottom to drain away liquid and provide access
to finished compost.
5. Site: It should be placed on bare earth to take advantage of microbial
organisms.
There are several types of Compost Containers:
1. Old Bin - Cut the bottom out of an old trash bin and you have a cheap
container with a lid.
2. Cardboard and Wire Mesh Container: Simply drive in four posts into
the ground and staple wire mesh to them. Insert cardboard inside and
cover the top with plastic.
3. Sectional wooden bin Container: Sections of wood are stacked up or
removed depending on the size of your heap. It has a lid and can be easily
moved around and dismantled.
A Compost Container is an apt solution to keep your compost heap in good
order. A Compost Container allows you to layer up your compost, and keeps
close watch on internal conditions to obtain perfect finished compost.
