Compost Bins

Compost bins are used for effectively decomposing organic material; this is done by controlling proper aeration and moisture retention. These ideal conditions stimulate the activity of aerobic organisms that create high temperature leading to formation of compost.

Choosing compost bins:

Compost bins are available in market in various shapes and sizes. They can also be made at home using simple available material like corner posts, strips of wood and even corrugated iron.
However, a little bit of thinking and planning is required in making these compost bins, as badly done compost bins will not only lead to difficult conditions for composting but can also be an eye sore. The compost bins will also depend upon the size of the garden and its position.

Location of compost bins

The most important question is also the location of the compost bins. Two important points to consider while choosing the location are one, whether the conditions are proper for composting and two, whether it looks 'good' in your yard. Compost bins need to be placed in areas where there is good air circulation. It is also advisable to screen the heap from view by using shrubs and fences. It should preferably be far away from the outdoor party or recreation area.

Advantages

There are many advantages in using compost bins in your garden. They provide you with natural organic and beautiful garden. These bins are usually cheap and available in amazing variety. Even recycled plastic containers are available. Also composting can be messy and time-consuming job. Using compost bins avoid all these problems. The fact that they help control heat and moisture content which speeds up the composting process is an added advantage. It is also helpful to manage household scrap like vegetables and fruits.

Disadvantages

There are certain fallouts of compost bins. The disadvantages depend upon the type of compost bins you are using. For example, commercial composting bins are comparatively expensive and hand made compost bins, if improperly done are ineffective.
