Composting is the process where microorganisms break down organic material into compost. Bin compost is considered as one of the easiest way of composting.

Bin composting

Composting in a bin involves a construction of a structure facilitating two primary bins one secondary bins and storage space for having finished compost. Usually bin composting is considered the simplest form of in-vessel composting. This bin can be made of wooden walls, can be made out of a grain bin or a separate building can be used. Selecting a site for composting is very necessary. Usually the site of bin compost should be well drained and away from water areas. It should be easily accessible. The size of bin compost depends on many things like the purpose of composting, composting operations etc. bin composting method works in a similar way to the aerated static pile. They sometimes use forced aeration on the floor of the bin with little or no turning of the material in the bin. Though, occasional mixing can sometimes refresh the mixture, speeding up the process. Places where several bins are used, the process can be further simplified by transferring the compost from one bin to another. The principle difference between the traditional methods of composting and bin compost is related to the high size of the bins.

Advantages of bin compost

The bins allow the material to be stacked higher facilitating the use of floor space. The high sizes of the bins allow the material to remain compact. The depth of the material allows greater air circulation. Bin control or eliminate bad odor and can be managed easily. They also help in keeping away the rodents and pests like raccoons and rats. They are weather protected. They also control all the conditions required for composting like temperature and moisture. If you have more bins then you get the additional advantage of having both quantitative and qualitative compost. This is the best method for farm composting. They also look neat thereby solving your aesthetic crisis.

Disadvantages of bin compost

Bin composting requires high initial investment. It is an active way of composting, meaning that you have to keep monitoring the system from time to time. An ill managed bin compost system can lead to unfinished compost.

However, barring a few disadvantages, bin compost can be the perfect solution for good quality compost.
