Use of recycled water at home:
Apart from flush water almost all the water that is being used in the home, can be re-used to some degree. In a typical house water can be collected from seven main sources that includes shower, bathtub and the bathroom sink. Together these three sources constitute almost 75% of non-flush water consumed in the home and contain less than 10% of particulates. The other 4 sources comprise of washing machine, utility sink, dishwasher and the last but certainly not the least the kitchen sink. Collection of water for recycling: A temporary solution for the collection of water from the above-mentioned sources is to manually bucket the water, which is usually termed as greywater, from the source to its eventual destination. However there is a more sophisticated method that includes all the sources to re-route the drainpipes of the fixtures and appliances from which re-use of water is intended into a common discharge buffer tank. In such a case a small electric or hand pump may be needed additionally if gravity feed is not possible. Home appliances like dishwashers and washing machines have their own discharge pumps, which are capable of delivering water to an elevated storage tank. Uses of the recycled water: The quality of the recycled water collected ultimately depends upon what is being put in it when it is clean. In order to get good quality water there is a need to filter out any particles by using a simple mesh filter on the plughole. It should be noted that soap and detergent residues could be harmful and hence it is best to use biodegradable cleaning products. However, if the greywater is passed through several filtering systems like a settling tank, then grease trap, then sand filter, the resulting water can be used with little worry over the potential accumulation of harmful chemicals. It can be applied to all types of vegetation. If there is lack of space or resources for this kind of filtration the water that have been saved can still be used to top up a toilet system or used selectively in the garden.
