Efficient landscape irrigation:

An overview:

An attractive garden and landscape obviously adds to the value of a home and bring years of beauty and enjoyment. However gardening takes a lot of efforts like watering, fertilization and taking proper care of the plants. To ease the efforts the help of water efficient design can be opted in order to curb various plant diseases, minimize the use of chemical fertilizers, and above all saving water along with money, labor and time. Besides these benefits one can also upgrade the look of the landscape by learning about proper lawn care, irrigation system maintenance and low water use gardens.

Efficiency of manual irrigation:

Homes with automatic sprinkler systems are found to use more water than twice as much required on an average than homes that manually irrigate with a hose and sprinkler. However this result takes into consideration the difference in the landscape size, but doesn't consider the quality of a landscape or landscaping materials such as turf, Xeriscape, etc. Even though homes that are equipped with automatic sprinkler systems use substantially more water than their hose dragging counterparts, research have shown that on an average basis these homes do not use more water than the local climate conditions indicated and was required for optimum growth of turf grass.

Advantages of manual irrigation:

At present if a manual irrigation is used and the owner is insisting to install an automatic system then he or she can expect a rise in the water bills. As it has been in recent studies of homes with and without automatic sprinkler systems show that homes with automatic systems use substantially more water outdoors on average. Besides this an automatic irrigation systems, if not properly managed, can waste a lot of water. However one cannot ignore the benefits of reduced labor for watering, convenience, full landscape coverage, the ability to control irrigation timing, and added value of a home. The best thing to go for would be minimize the costs by carefully designing a system that meets the specific needs of a landscape, programming the clock properly, adjusting the program frequently in response to changes in the weather, installing a rain shutoff device or soil moisture sensor, and maintaining the system.
