An exhaust fan is a type of fan that is used to move air out of an enclosure for better circulation. Mostly in conventional types of houses exhaust fans are used in the bathrooms or in kitchens. However it can play an important role in temperature regulation and cooling also. Research conducted in this regard has shown that the quality of indoor air can be worse than that of outdoor air. Today many homes are built or remodeled more tightly, without regard to the factors that assure fresh and healthy indoor air. Also a modern home today contains many furnishings, appliances and products that can affect indoor air quality. However not all of the exhaust fans are created equal and many of them have low powered fans that can barely push open the first flapper damper much less the second flapper at the roof. As in case of other consumer products the things that work better and are more reliable often cost more but in case exhaust of fans it only costs a little more money to get a very high-quality fan.

Exhaust fans play an important role in the ventilation and cooling system of a house. They remove odors from the house, which improves indoor air quality and also remove moisture, which can increase the level of humidity in a house thus bringing a cooling effect. High humidity can damage building materials and worse, high humidity can cause mold growth and mold may affect a family's health. Generally most of the exhaust systems consist of an exhaust fan, ducting and an exterior hood. In some houses a central exhaust system is used for cooling, in which one fan draws moisture and odors from several rooms of the house using a network of ducts. A kitchen exhaust system usually has the fan and fan motor in the exhaust hood while other systems use an in-line fan, which is in the exhaust duct, or a fan outside the house. It is found that in-line and outdoor exhaust fans are usually quieter than systems with the fan in the room.
