Parts of a Plastic Laminate Countertop
These countertops have 3 parts ń the Backsplash, The Deck ń the countertop itself, and the nose or front edge. There are several types of backsplash. The first one is Set On, where in a loose splash it stuck to the desk. This is a standard method. A loose backsplash 4î high is placed on top of the counter and is stuck to the desk. The second type is attached ń where a separate splash is connected behind the deck. The third type is Coved ń where a perpetual sheet of plastic laminate rolls from the flat deck to the vertical splash. This is the most preferred option.
Laminate countertops may have a square or rolled edge. The rolled edge type has many profiles. The square edge type is beveled on the edges, has wood inserts or brass inlays to create a rich custom look. Plastic laminate sheets are available in 3í, 4í and 5í widths and lengths of 8í, 10í and 12í. If these dimensions are exceeded then a seam is required. Wide seams can collect dirt and require filler.
Characteristic of a Plastic Laminate Countertops
Plastic laminates may be produced in an entire range of colors and patterns like metal, granite, marble, wood and leather. The texture may be smooth, grained, shiny or matte. Shiny laminates or solid colors are more prone to damage than matte or patterned surfaces. As the structure is made up of layers, it is not practical to mend surface chips, scratches and cuts. Ceramic or abrasive objects can damage the surface when dragged across the countertop. Seams are the most susceptible area of such kind of countertops. If the seam is not properly matched or sealed, water may penetrate into the substrate. This substrate may swell or crumble. Perpetual exposure to high temperature may cause the laminate to separate from the core material or melt.
