Best time to renovate a lawn
The timing for lawn renovation varies according to grass type and altitude of the site. For the most success seed cool-season anytime from March through September. Seed warm-season grasses April through July. At high elevations do not use warm-season grasses. Seeding after the first fall cold is not recommended, as young seedlings may be killed. It is better to wait until the following spring to do lawn renovation.
How to renovate a lawn
Kill existing grass and weeds using a non-selective herbicide. Glyph sate is only effective on actively growing grass and weeds; the area should be well irrigated to encourage plant growth before applying the herbicide. Allow the spray to dry for one day following the application. When the existing vegetation is dead then mow the site to 1/2 inch and remove the debris by hand raking or lawn mower. If there is an existing thatch layer thicker than 1 inch, remove it from the, but the soil must be exposed. Spread seed on exposed soil to allow for seed to soil contact.
Before renovation
There are numerous things to consider before beginning a lawn renovation project. First, it is important to determine why the lawn deteriorated so that remedial measures can be taken during the renovation process. If the lawn is thinning due to an expanding tree that shades the lawn and competes for water and nutrients, one should select shade-tolerant grass varieties. Knowing the cause for lawn failure can also make the person aware of changes in enriching practices such as mowing; watering and fertilizing that may be necessary.
