Ripsaws for handyman:

Introduction:

A saw is any tool that is used for cutting materials like wood. It consists of serrated blade, run by electricity, hand or other sources of power.

Ripsaws:

A ripsaw is a hand operated saw commonly used for cutting along the grain of any material. As the name suggests, ripsaw is especially designed for making a rip cut. Rip cut is nothing but a parallel cut made in the direction of the grain of any work piece. Such a cut is made effectively only with the help of ripsaws. A rip saw is designed in such a way that it consists of flat front edge on the cutting edge of each tooth as opposed to forward or backward direction found in many other tools. This provides the tooth the support it needs to make a straight cut across the grain. The teeth are most commonly right angled to blades and are pitched approximately eighty five to ninety degrees In Some saws, the teeth gradually become larger as they move down the handle. Such teeth are also known as incremental teeth. This design is useful for facilitating the use of stronger teeth at appropriate places. However while choosing any ripsaw it is very necessary to measure the distance of the teeth accurately as sometimes the angles are at extremes rendering the saw almost unsuitable for any kind of work. Ripsaws are most commonly made with metal blade or blade holder. The handles can be made from many different materials though; wood is the most popular choice.

Storage and maintenance:

Since ripsaws are made from metal, they need extra protection to avoid rusting and dulling of blades. For this purpose, the saws should be kept in places, which are free from moisture and dirt. The ripsaw can also dull with age and therefore regular checks are necessary to avoid any such problems. If the saw has indeed become dull then it needs to be sharpened appropriately.

Disadvantages:

Ripsaw is losing popularity in some sawing sectors due to ready-made availability of wooden planks of desired shapes and sizes. It is also commonly replaced with other similar and less expensive tools for sawing operations.

Despite its disadvantage, ripsaw is indeed one of the most important tools for any handyman to have in his shopping cart.
