What is a Duct Tape?

Duct tape is a strong fabric based adhesive tape. It is originally being referred to as duck tape. The width of the duct tape is generally 1.88 inches (48mm). It is a multipurpose tape. It is generally available in silver and black color, but in recent times many other colors and a transparent tape has also been introduced in the market.

Origin of Duct Tape

The duct tape first came into being during the World War II in the year 1942. it was introduced for the purpose of sealing the ammunition cases as it was waterproof in nature. A division of Johnson & Johnson called as Permacel used a rubber based adhesive to make it waterproof as the rubber could resist water and applied a fabric backing so as to help ripping. Owing to its properties it was also being used for repairing military equipments such as Jeeps, Guns and Aircraft. It was also being referred to as 100mph tape because of the legendary belief that it resists wind traveling upto 100mph speed.

Nomenclature of the Duct Tape

The duct tape got its name due to its usage in the heating and the air conditioning ducts. Internationally it has got different names in different parts of the world. In Australia duct tapes refers to PVC tapes. The duck brand fabric backed tapes are being called as Power tapes. The other cloth-backed tapes are referred to as Cloth tapes or Gaffer tapes. In many parts of the world it is also termed as Jesus tapes may be due to its ability to do miracles.

Uses of the Duct Tape

Duct tapes are one of the very common belonging in everybody's tool kit. Duct tape is held in the highest regard by the engineering circle for its versatility and holding power. NASA engineers have especially immense faith in this product as an emergency tool. The duct tape has got a wide range of usage from the Office where it's being used as a common adhesive to seal things to the Golf course for the purpose of mending your shoes and golf club. The musicians, on the film sets, are also using duct tapes; a more specialized form is used called as Gaffer tapes.
