Different counter materials require different maintenance regimens, but there are general practices that apply to all. Many counters are not entirely heatproof. Most counters will chip or dent if they are hit with a heavy object, so try not to bang heavy pots or equipment on them.
Types of counter tops and methods of cleaning
1. Butcher block-butcher-block countertops are sealed for protection against water. Clean butcher block with a sponge dipped in a mild solution of dish detergent and water.
2. Ceramic- The grout in a ceramic countertop becomes stained if it is not sealed properly.
3. Granite- for everyday cleaning just wiping down granite with a damp cloth. Sealed granite is resistant to most stains, but unsealed granite is not.
4. Laminate- Wipe laminate countertops with a mild cleaner like liquid dish detergent and water. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or those that contain agents that could discolor the laminate.
5. Solid surface- these countertops are synthetics that emulate marble or natural stone but are easier to clean. After each use just wipe down a solid surface countertop with a sponge and a weak solution of dishwashing liquid in water.

Granite countertops are easily cleaned because of its low porosity. Granite is available in a wide range of colours. Unlike granite, one never has to seal or polish quartz countertops. Soapstone countertops in kitchen are a natural, non-porous material, which means it will not stain and is not affected by chemicals, acids and temperatures.
